Ranking the Godzilla Monsters (#20-11)
Ooh, now we're getting somewhere. The following kaiju are, in my opinion, pretty cool.
Let's begin.
#20: Jet Jaguar (Film Appearances: Godzilla vs. Megalon) Abilities: Can alter size at will, flight, skilled melee fighter, spotlight eyes
AKA: Ultraman II
Here we have another cheesy kaiju. Or, in this case, a mecha. This guy is so cheesy that he's awesome and automatically makes it into the top 20. He's really the only instance of having a human-esque mecha appear in a Godzilla film, which makes him unique. The idea for him actually came from the winner of a design contest Toho held, who drew a mech titled "Red Alone". Toho tweaked this character and created Jet Jaguar, who was originally supposed to star in his own film against Megalon (This explains why Godzilla does nothing in the movie until the fight at the end). Anyway, Jet Jaguar's pretty cheesy and awesome and I'm a fan of him.
#19: Orga (Film Appearances: Godzilla 2000) Abilities: Can control Millennian UFO remotely, plasma cannon, regeneration, can absorb other monsters' DNA, detachable lower jaw
AKA: Grrrrreat!
Orga, while not the best fighter of the bunch, is still a unique enemy that ushered in the Millennium era of Godzilla films. He also proved to be quite interesting with his ability to use DNA from other kaiju to try and regenerate and reform himself. My only real problem with him in this film is that he was just a UFO for most of the movie, not appearing until the very end as himself. He was also killed rather easily (But in a completely badass way).
#18: Monster X/Keizer Ghidorah (Film Appearances: Godzilla: Final Wars) Abilities: Gravity beams, agility, can transform into Keizer Ghidorah (Keizer Ghidorah abilities: Gravity beams, telekinesis, flight, energy drainage)
AKA: That One Anime Villain Who's Also a Dragon
Okay, let me go ahead and say that Keizer Ghidorah's design is AWESOME. I like Monster X's as well. This guy is truly menacing and powerful, and it was nice to see him fight Godzilla after all the other monsters in this movie were just being killed and knocked out left and right by Godzilla (If you can't tell, I have a problem with that). Anyway, I basically really like this guy's design and abilities.
Also, Monster X is pretty much as close to having Godzilla fighting an anime villain as you'll get.
#17: King Caesar (Film Appearances: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Godzilla: Final Wars) Abilities: Experienced in martial arts, can reflect beams with eyes
AKA: The Japanese and the Chinese Don't Like Each Other
I really feel bad for this guy. So many people seem to hate him. I don't get it to be quite honest with you. I really like both his Showa and Millennium designs and he's pretty interesting. He's an ancient Shisa kaiju that can turn his enemy's beams against them. How cool is that? He's not the toughest of kaiju or anything, but he serves his purpose in each film he's in, even in Final Wars (Where most kaiju get little to no screen time). He also has a pretty badass entrance in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
#16: Mechagodzilla II/Super Mechagodzilla (Film Appearances: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II) Abilities: Energy transfer, plasma grenade, laser cannons, mega-buster ray, various missiles, "g-crusher", can attach to Garuda to become Super Mechagodzilla
AKA: The Stationary Weapons Outlet
Definitely my least favorite of the Mechagodzillas, but a pretty cool mecha nonetheless. While this mecha falls short in hand-to-hand combat, he is a beast with weapons. Much like the later Heisei mecha M.O.G.U.E.R.A., he has an extensive list of abilities. He even comes close to killing Godzilla with the "G-Crusher", targeting Godzilla's secondary brain with an electric shock.
#15: Godzilla Junior (Film Appearances: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah) Abilities: Atomic breath, resistance to Micro-Oxygen
AKA: Ruh-Roh!
Now this is the Godzilla descendant I was talking about. This guy goes from cute to adorable to looking just like his adoptive father. He has atomic breath and his eyes glow red when he's scared, which is adorable. He's basically just a smaller, weaker Godzilla. He does evolve into a full-grown, powerful one at the end- but then Toho never did anything with him again. That sucks.
#14: Battra (Film Appearances: Godzilla vs. Mothra: Battle for Earth) Abilities: Electrical blasts, energy pulses, burrowing, flight, prism beams, energy shock
AKA: Emo Mothra
Wow, talk about a cool design. Especially the larva, just... wow. This was a cool little ally for Mothra to have in the film, and he certainly made himself known onscreen. Seeing Godzilla go up against essentially two Mothras with varying abilities was awesome. Even as a larva this guy was powerful.
#13: Titanosaurus (Film Appearances: Terror of Mechagodzilla) Abilities: Can create a cyclone with tail, adept swimmer, extraordinary jumper, strong jaw
AKA: #FishRCool
Before I talk about this guy, his roar is also super annoying, just like Gabara's. However, it's not ear-piercing exactly, so that's good. This kaiju is actually said in the film to be a calm, good-natured kaiju who normally would not attack, but since he's being mind-controlled in the film he is aggressive. This guy just has a really cool feel to him and a pretty nice design, and he's also really strong. Like, seriously, he picks Godzilla up with his jaw at one point. Damn.
#12: Mecha-King Ghidorah (Film Appearances: Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah) Abilities: Flight, gravity beams, laser beam, electric capture cables
AKA: His Brains Still Function Somehow
Another pretty cool kaiju design from the Heisei era (Although let's admit it, pretty much every kaiju in this era had an awesome suit), this guy is essentially a mechanical King Ghidorah. I don't know what all to say other than that he's pretty cool, but not quite as cool as the natural King Ghidorah. I'll talk about my thoughts on the natural one later on in the list...
#11: Kiryu (Film Appearances: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.) Abilities: Maser cannons, laser cannons, rocket launchers, flight pack, arm blade, electrical surge, drill hand, flight, absolute zero cannon
AKA: My Name is Inigo Montoya
Yeah, what a badass take on Mechagodzilla. This guy is best highlight of enemies in the Millenium era, and he's just plain awesome. It was also cool to see him be able to go berserk at times, it added a really interesting perspective to his backstory and function. This guy gets everything done right in his screen time to, boasting almost every trait a good Godzilla kaiju should have.
Welp, that does it for this one...
Now for the final part, the Top 10. :)
