Top 10 Favorite Sonic Boss Battles
Hey everyone, it's me again, and guess what. Yep, it's another ranking post. This time, however, I'll be ranking my top 10 favorite boss battles from the Sonic series. This is basically a cover-up post since I can't work on Derp Quest II right now due to being away from home and ranking all of the Sonic games will take a while. So let's begin, shall we?
#10: Super Mecha Sonic (Sonic 3 & Knuckles)
Encountered in: Sky Sanctuary
Fought as: Knuckles
Difficulty: Easy-Medium
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favorite game of all time, so of course it would show up on here. Super Mecha Sonic is actually one of the only bosses that's not from Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles, being exclusive to S3&K. Anyways, onto the boss itself. This guy is the final boss of Knuckle's story, and is the 2nd phase of an extremely underwhelming, easy battle against Mecha Sonic. After facing defeat at the hands of Knuckles, he decides to start draining energy from the Master Emerald, causing him to become extremely powerful. What follows is not an extremely hard battle, but a fun one, at least in my opinion. His attack pattern is simple: he lands on the emerald, drains power, then launches up into the air to perform much more strong versions of his previous attacks. He even kills the Eggman robot that was Knuckle's nemesis throughout the game, which is pretty interesting. It's also pretty cool to fight an exclusive boss.
#9: Eggcube (Sonic Advance 3)
Encountered in: Toy Kingdom
Fought as: Any character pair
Difficulty: Easy
Okay, I have to admit, this is a really weird boss battle. It's essentially a jack-in-the-box controlled by Dr. Eggman and Gemerl, but with a twist. It can shoot out various hazards and enemies, along with Gemerl himself. You basically have to wait for Eggman to reveal himself, then hit his device to move the machine backwards. Once it goes too far back, it falls off the edge of the platform and explodes. It's a nice, quirky little boss battle that isn't too hard or too easy.
#8: Nega-Wisp Armor (Sonic Colors WII)
Encountered in: Terminal Velocity
Fought as: Sonic/Wisp Color Powers
Difficulty: Medium
Here we have the final boss of Sonic Colors for the WII, and definitely my favorite one from the game by a long-shot. Yeah, sure, the other bosses are fun, but this one is just so much more exciting and satisfying to play, especially when instead of being on one of the theme park's planets, you're running around in space on the side of the support system. And what's even better? The boss itself. For starters, this machine looks badass and actually a little scary compared to the previous ones in the game. Secondly, this boss flips things around: instead of using the wisps to fight, you have to fight the wisps' powers (Until the final hit). The way you hit this guy is pretty fun too: you have to actually use the homing attack to get up its arm and finally attack where Eggman is. And, to top it all off, it's followed by a super-short 2nd act where you must outrun the giant explosion consuming the support system. It's pretty cool. Like the previous two bosses, the Nega-Wisp Armor isn't too tough, but it's a fun wildcard boss to use to finish off a game as great as Sonic Colors.
#7: Egg Dragoon (Sonic Unleashed)
Encountered in: Eggmanland
Fought as: Werehog
Difficulty: Medium
Ah, yes. The Egg Dragoon. This guy's pretty notorious for being annoying and all, but I don't think it gets enough credit, seeing as how it was, in my opinion, the only really enjoyable Werehog boss in the game. It's also pretty fun to see the whole "fire-and-ice" dynamic going on here. Attacking is simple: you wait for Eggman to circle the platform and them attack the green part of the machine. After that, you shake the side cores off. This repeats until you get a series of quick-time events to finish him off. There isn't much else to say other than that, as previously mentioned, he attacks with fire and ice. It's a fun battle that isn't infuriatingly hard (I'm looking at you, Eggmanland).
#6: Egg Eagle (Sonic Rush)
Encountered in: Altitude Limit
Fought as: Sonic/Blaze
Difficulty: Medium
Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure actually have some really great boss battles, and I mean that. I will say that I was stuck between this and the Egg King from this game, but I stuck with the Egg Eagle. Why? It's a high-stakes, challenging, cool-looking battle that has lots of fun and tension in it. It has tons of attacks: it can fly in the background and shoot projectiles, it can try to crush you, it can try to blow you off the platform with fans and much more. That's really about it, I just think it's a really fun boss.
#5: Silver the Hedgehog (Sonic Generations)
Encountered in: Area 3 Rival Battle (Crisis City)
Fought as: Modern Sonic
Difficulty: Easy
I bet you thought I was going to say Silver from Sonic '06 at first. Don't worry, I hate that boss. But this one, on the other hand, is completely different and extremely fun. So, what's different? Well, you're in Crisis City instead of a small town dining area for starters. You're also constantly running forward while Silver flies ahead. Also... okay, literally everything is different here.
IT'S NO USE!
I'm not sure what came over me. Anyways, this boss isn't hard whatsoever, but you'll see why I like it. So Silver has 5 different attacks, 2 of which can be exploited to hit him. He can pick up cars and throw them. He can pick up cars and try to crush you with them. He can shoot psychic knives. He can also pick up several cars at once which you can use the homing attack to move across and hit him. The alternative way is to wait until he groups several cars together and launches them at you, where you can run across them and hit him. After a few hits, he'll move into his final phase: he creates a giant ball of cars and other rubble and sends it after you. He will then try to crush you with storage containers and the like. You must hit him one more time and send him under the large ball, where it will collapse. Like I said, this one's a blast to play.
#4: Metal Madness/Metal Overlord (Sonic Heroes)
Encountered in: Final Chapter
Fought as: Team Super Sonic
Difficulty: Hard
As some of you may or may not know, Sonic Heroes doesn't really have the greatest bosses, at least in my opinion anyway. But, as it turns out, having every team working together on one boss and then having Super Sonic along with Tails and Knuckles take them out actually works pretty well. So, who is this guy? Well, that's actually Metal Sonic, believe it or not. He's kind of scary, yeah? Well, maybe more so in the game. There's great tension in this battle, and I mean it. You actually feel like screwing up could result in Metal Sonic taking over the entire planet. Oh, and using all of the teams to fight at once with a challenging final battle is fun as hell. Enough said.
#3: The Biolizard (Sonic Adventure 2)
Encountered in: Cannon's Core
Fought as: Shadow
Difficulty: Hard
I know what you're thinking if you've never played this game before: what is this thing? Well, it's a damn good boss fight if that's what you mean, and also a really hard one. It's actually the semi-final boss, and it's only available to Shadow. The interesting thing about this one is that it can't walk since it's an old prototype. Instead, it attacks with its mouth and the machine on its back, which may sound criminally easy, but trust me, it's not. It starts off simple: you run from its head, then surf up the rail on its neck to attack the device on its back. From there, it gets marginally harder. Projectiles and other obstacles get in your way and eventually you have to hover around avoiding tons of tiny mines to reach it again. It's a real challenge and very interesting to play.
#2: Metal Sonic (Sonic CD)
Encountered in: Stardust Speedway
Fought as: Sonic
Difficulty: Medium
Okay, surely you've all heard of this one. It's one of the most iconic boss battles in video game history, and its theme gets reused all the time. If you're still not sure what I'm talking about, have a listen:
Anyway, this battle's premise is simple: beat Metal Sonic to the end of the level before Eggman catches up with his insta-kill laser. It's so simple and mildly challenging that it's hard to forget, especially when, while it's a great game, most of Sonic CD's bosses are terrible. In fact, it's pretty interesting that my favorite boss battle from the game isn't even really a boss.
#1: Death Egg Robot (Sonic 2)
Encountered in: Death Egg
Fought as: Sonic
Difficulty: Hard
And at number one we have the also-iconic final boss battle of Sonic 2: The Death Egg Robot. Coming right on the heels of the introduction of Mecha/Silver Sonic, this massive mecha is a challenging foe to beat (especially since the player has no rings). This mecha has a truly epic theme and has many tricks and attacks up its sleeve. It is, in my opinion, a perfect end to a Sonic game. What more is there to say? Here, just watch it:
Anyway, that's the list! I hope you enjoyed this silly little thing, I needed something to do while I'm away! Thanks as always.
